MAY 2017 NEWS
Huge thanks to all who supported our Paint Night FUNdraiser with local artist, Colleen Watchorn on May 8, 2017 at Smitty’s Restaurant, Steinbach.  The event was a fun evening of socializing and art-making, and raised over $900.00 for our children’s shelter program!  Our appreciation for staff for their successful promotion and organizing of this event, and special thanks to our board of directors for their support and participation.

Thanks also to community members who have generously donated to our annual Teddy Bear Fun Day, to be held June 3 at Jake Epp Library Park – your support ensures that this fun event can be offered at no-cost to families

Finally, we would like to thank those who have responded to our April donation mailer (National Victim’s of Violence Week), including our updated wish list of items currently needed by our shelter and interim housing programs. Your  generous support will ensure that we can continue to offer free support to families in need in our region – together we can make a difference!
Contact our admin office at 204-326-6062 to find out how you can help out  – thank you!

MARCH-APRIL 2017 NEWS
Agape House would like to extend thanks to staff, volunteers and community who together make our important community work possible. Each year our shelter works with an average of 200 families in our program areas including: emergency shelter, interim housing, follow-up counselling, non-resident counselling for adults and children, and children’s programming.  Did you know that our workers also perform outreach and public education services and that we serve the South Eastman Region?

Special thanks to Southland Church for their generous donation this April, and also for the home repair and maintenance work that has been completed in the past few months – your support has lifted our spirits and has enabled us to help those in need. Thanks also to Steinbach United Church, who continues to support us with monthly food hamper donations and the free use of meeting space, including for our Cabaret of Monologues in March.  We are so appreciative of your thoughtful support of our work!

A huge thank you to Greenridge United Church in Dominion City – thank you for welcoming our staff and board to worship with you, and for collecting much-needed donations for our shelter clients.  Finally, we would like to acknowledge students and staff of Clearspring Middle School, who raised over $840.00 for our shelter in March through a student-organized school carnival – we were delighted and amazed by the talent, creativity and concern for others demonstrated by Clearspring School: truly inspiring!

Agape House is also fortunate to have the ongoing support of master gardener, Annette Schewe and husband Les for the upcoming growing season. Plans for this year include vegetable gardens for our shelter and interim units, as well as maintenance and expansion of our shelter memorial garden.  We have also enjoyed having practicum student, Richard, from Providence College join us this month to help with our Spring Fundraising Mailout, and in May we look forward to WHEAT Institute practicum student, Donna, who will support our staff and clients with art therapy programming.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017 NEWS
Thanks to all those who have helped us with donations this winter.  We continue to receive donations from our November donation appeal – without your generosity we could not continue to serve women and children facing domestic violence in southeast Manitoba.  If you are able to give, every dollar will help us reach our $20,000.00 goal – THANK YOU!

Special thanks to Pastor Joel and the men’s ministry group at Southland Church in Steinbach.  The group has committed to helping our shelter and interim housing properties with some much-needed support, including building shelves for our family room, setting up beds, snow clearing and more!  Your thoughtfulness, compassion and sharing of time and talent has touched our hearts and will benefit our clients and hard-working staff – THANK YOU!

A reminder that clothing and household linens can be dropped off for Agape House at Best Sleep Centre, Steinbach during their regular store hours – there are two bins located inside the rear doors of the store that are designated for shelter donations. Other items we currently need are new underwear for women and children (must be new), pillow cases, bath towels, face cloths and blankets/comforters (sizes single and double).  Donations of craft supplies, board games and family-friendly DVDs are also needed and are greatly appreciated – please call the shelter at 204-326-6062 to arrange for pick up or delivery.

We are so grateful for your support – TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

NOVEMBER 2016 NEWS
Each November in Manitoba is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  In 2015, over 40,000 Manitobans sought support from Family Violence-funded agencies such as Agape House-Eastman Crisis Centre, Inc.  This year Agape Board members have initiated a purple ribbon campaign to raise awareness of Domestic Violence in the month of November – the hope is to grow the campaign in the years ahead.  Shelter staff have sent out an information letter and donation wish list – this annual campaign is vital to our ongoing work and we thank our supporters for their ongoing generosity.

This November Agape House was delighted to learn that Steinbach Shopper’s Drug Mart has raised over $8,000 as part of their Love You campaign for women’s health!  The campaign kicked off in early September, and Agape was honoured to be selected as the organization for this year’s initiative. This has been a very challenging year for our shelter, and these much-needed funds will help our shelter to fund its ongoing work with residential, non-residential and follow-up clients, and will also help us to continue the outreach and public education work we do in the southeast Manitoba region. Did you know that all of our services are provided at no cost?  Many of the women and children who come to us have only the clothes on their backs.

Our shelter receives partial funding from the Province of Manitoba, Family Violence Prevention Program, but requires community support to offer its services and cover all operational expenses.  For more information on our current donation needs please call 204-326-6062 during business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Monday through Thursday.  All monetary donations will receive charitable tax receipts and donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 3130, Steinbach, MB, R5G 1P5.  Donations in kind may also qualify for charitable donation receipts – please feel welcome to inquire by phone (204-326-6062).

Our sincere appreciation for your generosity – together we can make a difference for women and children dealing with domestic abuse.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016 NEWS
We are very pleased to announce that The Dufresne Group has donated three beds for our interim housing units – like Dufresne we believe in the power of community, and we feel that everyone deserves a safe, warm, comfortable place to sleep.  This support has boosted our spirits. Thank you, Dufresne for supporting the work we do every day with women and children in need!

Another amazing donation has come to us from Agape House board Vice-President Val Fehr.  Upon hearing that one of our washing machines was broken, Val stepped forward to donate two washers for our agency.  Thank you Val and family for this wonderful act of generosity and kindness – we could not not the work we do without the generosity of community.

SUMMER 2016 NEWS
Agape House wishes to thank Luba Petryk of Royal LePage Realestate for her amazing work collecting food donations for our shelter. The initiative also provided much-needed non-perishable food items for other charitable groups; Agape House was grateful to be part of this amazing initiative. Aside from being an award-winning agent, Luba is also a very active community volunteer, and she will be helping us with the upcoming Teddy Bear Fun Day, in October, 2016. It was no surprise that Luba was this year’s recipient of our Lead With Love Award. Thank you, Luba!

MARCH 2016 NEWS
This year has been a dynamic one for our shelter staff and board. We have been busy with staff training, developing evening programming for clients and planning for pending renovations to our shelter facility. Our board of directors continues to recruit for anticipated openings (June 2016).  The board seeks men and women who are passionate about human rights and who have expertise in legal, business, financial, policy or other backgrounds to augment our dynamic board of directors.  Those interested in participating in our board or on one of the board committees are asked to call the shelter director at 204-326-6062 to be connected with the board executive.

Special thanks to Southland Church, and Steinbach United Church for their ongoing support of our financial and grocery needs. Thanks also to two very special women who are volunteering their services to support our staff and clients: Cheryl Palmer (professional foot care) and Annette Schewe (therapeutic gardening).  And a HUGE thank you to the incredible folks at Best Sleep Centre, Steinbach – Best Sleep Centre accepts clothing and bedding donations at the rear entrance of their retail location, year-round during regular store hours.   Our supporters are amazing – together we can make a difference!

OCTOBER and NOVEMBER 2015 NEWS
Agape House has sent out a donation mailer to our supporters and community contacts in the region this November. November is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month by the Province of Manitoba, and after thirty years of working with women and children in Southeast Manitoba, we still see a consistent need for our work.  Aside from emergency shelter support, we also offer non-residential counselling and supports, including Triple P Parenting and Anger Solutions training. Further, our counsellors perform valuable outreach and public education work on a variety of topics related to domestic violence.

Our shelter receives partial funding from the Province of Manitoba, but requires community support to offer its services and cover all operational expenses.

JULY and AUGUST 2015 NEWS
Agape House outreach and children’s counsellors, together with administration, support staff, Board members, family and volunteers from our communities, have been out in Southeastern Manitoba this summer participating in parades and festivals to raise awareness of our shelter and the services we offer. Some of the events we have participated in were Summer in the City and Pioneer Days (Steinbach), Canada Day Parade (Vita), and the Kleefeld Honey Festival.  It is important for us to interact in our region so that communities know about us and our services.

Aside from crisis work with in-shelter clients (women and children fleeing family abuse), many  people do not realize that we also offer non-residential client supports such as referrals and counselling. Further, Agape House staff are available to do presentations for adult and student groups. Presentation topics include healthy relationships, self-esteem, general information about our shelter and services; and information on violence against women and children.

IMPORTANT!!! We are still selling raffle tickets to support our shelter services – there are three great prize packages (see June News!).  Please call our administration line at 204-326-6062 to purchase.

The organizers of the Annual St. Labre 200 Go-Karts Giving Back to the Community have announced special project funding to support the replacement needs of our shelter.  The hard working St. Labre team has promised a donation of $500.00 to purchase a double-size shelter mattress.  We thank the St. Labre 200 committee for their generosity.

MARCH and APRIL 2015 NEWS
On March 26, Winners opened its doors in Steinbach’s Clearspring Shopping Centre, and the staff of Agape House were honoured to accept a $5,000 cheque from the Canadian Women’s Foundation. These funds will allow us to replace critical materials at the shelter and will provide much-needed funds for staff training.

This March we also received financial support from Southland Church in Steinbach, along with many donations of clothing for women and children from personal donors. We are grateful and feel very fortunate to enjoy this ongoing community support – without the commitment of community, many of the services we offer would not be possible due to limited budgets.

Agape House would also like to thank all supporters of our Giving Day fundraiser in partnership with Hudson’s Bay Company, Winnipeg on April 2nd, 2015.  Special thanks to  the Steinbach Arts Council for their generous support of this initiative. $135.00 was raised as a result of this initiative.

On April 9, Agape House staff members Meghan Edwards, Candice Perry and Pam Hadder spoke at an South Eastman Rotary Club fundraiser dinner. Agape House was appreciative for this opportunity to address community leaders about our work, and we are grateful for the commitment from Rotary to raise donations for our shelter and outreach work.

The staff and student of Ecole Saint-Joachim in La Broquerie warmed our hearts this month by informing us of their on-going fundraising activities for Agape House. Through bake sales and other initiatives, the school has already raised over $300 and they hope to raise a total of $750.
